Did you like dressing up for Halloween when you were a kid? Do you still like putting a costume for the festivities?

If you want to go as something that many people find really scary, then you should not be a ghost, ghoul, or goblin. You should be a … dentist!

Fear of the dentist affects millions of people across the United States, including people in our own community in and around Ortonville, MI. At Brandon Family Dental, we want to help you learn how to manage your dental anxiety.

Today, we are presenting three ways you can learn to manage your fears, so your mouth can stay healthy for many Halloweens to come.

To learn more or to make an appointment with us, just call 248-469-0218. We’re here to support you.

1. Think About Something Else

If you feel nervous about dental cleanings, one of the best things you can do is think about something else. That’s easier to do when you have something to distract you during your dental visit.

Many people find that listening to music is the perfect way to cope. Bring your headphones with you. That way you can close your eyes and focus on your favorite band instead of the sounds of dentistry. You may even want to make a “Dental Appointment Playlist.”

Another way to distract yourself is by watching television. We have TVs in our rooms. Just let us know if you have a show you’d like to watch. That way you can focus on being entertained, while we work to keep your smile healthy!

2. Find a Dental Office That Gets to Know You

One of the best parts of what we do is building relationships with our patients. We want to celebrate your successes and milestones, and we want to support you when you need it.

All of these relationships started when someone visited us for the first time. When Dr. Harrell decided to open her own practice, it was because she wanted to be able to work closely with her patients and provide each of them with the care they deserve. That’s the approach everyone in our office takes when someone visits us.

By getting to know you, by listening to your concerns, we can provide the treatment you need in a way that helps you feel comfortable and relaxed. For some people that means taking advantage of our comfort options like enjoying a beverage, using a blanket or pillow, or just enjoying the views from our office.

At the same time, we know some patients will want more than some compassion and creature comforts.

3. Consider Dental Sedation

If your dental anxiety is high, then you may prefer sedation dentistry. With inhaled sedation (laughing gas) or oral sedation (medication), you can feel more at ease during your visits.

Sedation blocks pain. Sedation prevents you from feeling like you might gag. Sedation also helps you remain calm. And for some people, sedation helps them forget the details of their visits (which many patients say is the best part).

With dental sedation, you can get the benefits of professional care without the apprehension.
