Prevent Unhealthy Teeth and Gums

Brandon Family Dental is committed to providing you with quality dental services throughout the local Brandon area. We offer preventative dentistry in Ortonville, MI to ensure that you and your children maintain healthy teeth and gums for life.

Educate You about Your Teeth

One of the goals of our office is to educate you about the best dental practices. We want you to be able to maintain your teeth even when you are not in our office. To do so, we know that you need to be taught the right techniques and reasons behind brushing and flossing your teeth.

In addition, our dental team will work with your child to help them overcome any toothbrushing resistance that they may have. By making dentistry easy and fun, we will help encourage them to care for their own teeth, as well.

Part of our preventative dentistry consultations include nutritional counseling to help you and your child understand foods better and know which ones present a problem to your teeth. Foods rich in carbohydrates can lead to cavities, and sugary foods stick to your teeth and cause plaque to form.

Dental Cleanings and Exams

At Brandon Family Dental, we offer dental cleanings and exams to look over your teeth and clean the areas you cannot reach with a toothbrush alone. If we notice any problems while performing the exam, we will recommend a treatment plan for you.

One of the most common problems we see in our office is gum disease. We provide screenings and treatments to tackle the disease when it occurs, but it is possible for it to go undetected if you do not come in for regularly scheduled cleanings. Gum disease can form quickly and progress rapidly. Advanced gum disease leads to bone and tooth loss, and it is linked to serious medical conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Our gum disease treatments include:

  • PerioLase laser treatment
  • Scaling and root planing to clean beneath the gums and in the roots of your teeth
  • Flap surgery for second stage treatment, if needed
  • Arestin antibiotics in deep periodontal pockets, if needed
  • Antibacterial rinses, especially for chronic bad breath associated with gum disease

Our Preventative Dentistry Treatments and Care

During your regular checkup, we will spend a total of about an hour and a half with you. You’ll take a tour of our office, turn in your new patient forms, get X-rays and an initial exam by one of our skilled assistants, and then an exam by Dr. Harrell. She will spend as much time as you need to talk about a personalized treatment plan for you. Some of the preventative treatments and procedures Dr. Harrell will perform or recommend may include:

  • PreviDent 5000 prescription toothpaste
  • Sealants
  • Deep cleanings
  • Digital X-rays
  • Fluoride treatments such as fluoride varnish
  • Oral cancer screenings

Afterward, one of our hygienists will professionally clean your teeth, and then you’ll see our finance department before you head out.
