I see patients on a daily basis who readily admit that they are afraid of the dentist. Or I can see that they are visibly nervous about their appointment. Here is a great message for those patients: you don’t have to be afraid any longer. There are options available at our office that can give you the dental care you need without the fear and anxiety.
At Brandon Family Dental, we offer all phases of sedation dentistry in order to give our patients the best care in a comfortable environment. Most dental offices only offer nitrous oxide, but rarely offer a full range of sedation. Our office works to treat every patient with compassion and gentle care, but we also have options available for patients who have dental anxiety.
Getting Past Dental Fear
About 20 percent of Americans suffer from some sort of dental fear or anxiety. Some of those patients fear the dental office and the procedures, while others simply shutter at the idea of the dentist. This is one of the hardest demographics to reach in dentistry. When people are afraid of the dentist, they neglect their dental appointments and cleanings. The purpose of regular six-month examinations is to monitor your health and polish your teeth in order to inhibit the growth of plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria.
By skipping regular dental appointment, you increase the risk of getting cavities or serious oral health problems. No matter how much we hate the dentist, there will be a point and time where we will need a dentist to help us with our problems.
Our office will never lecture you about the state of your oral health. It’s just the opposite. We want to work with you in order to give you a healthier smile. One of the ways we can accomplish this is through sedation dentistry. Can’t stand the sights, sounds or smells of the dental office? There is a way to get your dental care without having to face any of those things.
Options for Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide – Nitrous oxide is the most common form of sedation in dentistry. It’s more commonly referred to as laughing gas and can be used on children and adults. The gas is easily rendered and wears off easily, which means you can drive yourself to and from your dental appointment. This level of sedation works well for patients who suffer from low dental anxiety.
Oral Conscious Sedation – This level of sedation is much stronger than nitrous oxide and has more predictable results. The sedation is rendered in pill-form and can be used on patients undergoing lengthy dental procedures or those with a moderate fear of the dentist. The process is simple. We prescribe you a type of medication that you take before your dental appointment. You’ll then have someone drive you to our office to receive your treatment. By the time you reach the dental chair, you will be in a total state of relaxation. The great thing about oral conscious sedation is that it is very predictable and allows us to complete multiple procedures in one sitting. Patients are relaxed under oral sedation that they typically fall asleep. In addition to helping patients with dental fear, oral sedation is very helpful for patients who have a bad gag reflex.
I can’t tell you how much sedation dentistry has changed the landscape of dentistry. I have treated patients with sedation who could barely step foot in a dental office. After their appointment, the patient’s perception of the dentist is totally changed.
